Laser Treatment for BPH (Enlarged Prostate) abroad
The prostate is one of the main components of the male reproductive system and is placed just below the bladder. The urethra, the thin tube that carries the urine from the bladder, passes directly through it. When the prostate is enlarged it could be a result of a disease called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and as a consequence it can lead to severe urinary symptoms such as pain during urination, pressure on the pelvis and in the prostate area, and incontinence. Laser surgery is often used to treat these issues.
During this procedure, the surgeon will guide a scope through the penis tip in order to reach the urethra, and as the urethra is surrounded by the prostate gland, the surgeon will then use a laser that will pass through the scope and eliminate all the excess of tissue that is blocking the urine flow. The removal process is divided in ablation and enucleation. The former melts the exceeding tissue and the latter cuts it away. Among the different types of laser surgeries used to heal BHP is photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), in which a laser vaporizes the tissue and enlarges the urinary channel. Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP) also cuts excess skin.
Compared with Transurethral Resection of the Prostate and Prostatectomy, also used to treat BHP, laser surgery presents more advantages. There are lower chances of bleeding, a shorter hospital stay, the catheter that gets left in place after surgery is needed for only 24 hours instead of a couple of days, the recovery is faster, and the results are more immediate, as the surgery outcome can be noticed right away and not after months like in the case of TURP and open prostatectomy.
