What is Eye Surgery?

Eye surgery , often called ocular surgery , involves any type of surgery performed on the eye or peripheries such as eyelids, eyebrows and tear ducts. The eye is an extremely fragile organ, so to perform any invasive procedures on it requires an expert surgeon the utmost care before, during, and after surgery.

What Happens Before an Eye Surgery Procedure?

Once an ophthalmologist has recommended a procedure, various preparations will be carried out before the operation. The eye contains a lot of densely packed nerves, so anesthesia is essential. Most commonly local anesthesia will be used , with topical drugs like lidocaine gel available for simple procedures. As local anesthesia needs cooperation from the patient, general anesthesia tends to be used with children, for traumatic eye injuries, major surgery, and nervous patients.

What happens before an eye surgery procedure?

Due to the prevalence of the condition, cataract extraction is the most commonly performed surgical procedure on the eye . Most cataract removal operations can be performed as an out patient, with only local anesthetic required, so there is usually no need for an overnight stay in hospital. However for a period of a few weeks after the operation, heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and certain other activities should be avoided. Another common ocular condition, glaucoma, will sometimes require surgical treatment. The aim of glaucoma surgery, as with all glaucoma treatments, is to lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) within the eye. Surgeons achieve this by unblocking the eyes' natural drainage, or creating new angles to allow the eyes to drain. 

If these procedures do not improve eye drainage, it is sometimes necessary to reduce production of the fluid by destroying part of the ciliary body. LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis), commonly called laser eye surgery is an increasingly popular method of correcting myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness), and astigmatisms (uneven curvature of the eye surface) . During a LASIK procedure, the cornea is reshaped to ensure that it correctly focuses the light shining on the retina at the back of the eye, thus improving vision. More than 95% of people who have a LASIK procedure will find their vision improved to the desired level, and side effects are uncommon.

Eye muscle (or extraocular muscle) surgery is the third most common type of eye surgery, with around 1.2 million procedures carried out in the USA every year. Typically eye muscle surgery will be used to correct strabismus , where the eyes are not correctly aligned with each other. Strabismus can be corrected by loosening, tightening, and even relocating the eye muscles.
